When to Order a Custom Wedding Suit: The Month-by-Month Timeline

The short version

Book your custom wedding suit appointment around four months before the wedding for the calmest run. It is the ideal, not a deadline: production takes five to six weeks, a date two or three months out still works, and we rush when a date is close. If groomsmen are ordering too, aim for about five months.

Book your appointment around four months before the wedding for the calmest run. It is the ideal, not a deadline: a date two or three months out is still very workable, and we rush a garment through when a date is close. These timelines exist to keep the whole thing off your mind, not to turn you away.

Production takes five to six weeks. That is make time, not the number to plan around. The rest of the four months covers the appointment, delivery, any adjustment, and the worst case, a remake, if it comes to that.

Plenty of grooms come to us later than that, and we can usually still make it work. What the extra time buys is calm: room for an adjustment, or the rare remake, without anyone watching a calendar.

Why Four Months When Production Is Six Weeks

A made-to-measure suit is built from scratch to your 21 measurements. There is no inventory to pull from. The cloth is cut to your pattern, the suit is assembled and finished by our team, checked, and shipped to you. That alone is five to six weeks, freight included.

The full process is longer than the manufacturing:

1. The appointment has to be booked, and evening and Saturday slots in wedding season (April through July) go a week or two ahead. 2. The design decisions get finalised before the order is placed. 3. After delivery, you want time to try the suit on and have anything adjusted, well before the last couple of weeks. 4. You want room for the rare case where something has to be remade. In eleven years we have seen it in about one order in twenty, and we cannot predict whose.

Four months covers all of it with room to spare. It also gives you time to think. Most men arrive at the first appointment without a clear picture of what they want, and that conversation goes somewhere better when nobody is watching the calendar.

*A note on the cloth: the fabrics and linings in these photographs are examples, not a fixed menu. Every lining is chosen for the man it is made for, so yours will be its own. Our books also change as mills come and go, and they change without notice. If a cloth you have chosen is unavailable when your order is placed, we replace it with one of the same quality or better, as close to the colour as we can get, and we tell you before anything is cut.*

The Month-by-Month Timeline

Count back from your wedding date.

| When | What happens | Who | |---|---|---| | About five months out | Settle the formality, colour, and whether the groomsmen are ordering. Send the party the booking link. If you are not sure yet, we work it out with you at the first appointment. | You | | About four months out (16 to 17 weeks) | Your appointment: the conversation, 21 measurements, cloth, and details. The order is placed. | You and me, at our studio | | Three and a half months out (15 weeks) | Still a comfortable point to book, with room for production and a fitting. Groomsmen ideally booked around now. | The whole party | | 15 to 9 weeks out | Production, five to six weeks including freight. | Our team | | About two months out (8 to 9 weeks) | The suit arrives. Try it on at home with the shirt and shoes you will wear. | You | | 7 to 5 weeks out | Any adjustment is booked and done by a local tailor, at our cost. Allow one to two weeks. | Us | | 4 to 2 weeks out | Try it on again, in case your weight has moved. Sort shoes, belt, socks, and pocket square. | You | | Final week | Have it professionally pressed and hang it on a wide hanger. | You |

That leaves about five weeks of slack between the adjustment window and the wedding. The slack is the point. It is what stops a small sleeve issue from becoming a problem the week of the wedding.

What Happens at Each Step

Booking the appointment

Booking takes two minutes and the appointment is complimentary. Book as soon as you know the date, not when you are sure what you want. Deciding is what the appointment is for. If you have not settled the look yet, how to choose a wedding suit walks through formality, colour, cloth, and details in order. It is a separate guide on purpose: this page is about timing, that one is about the decisions.

The appointment

Plan on 45 to 90 minutes at our studio with our Owner and Founder, Derek Burbidge, or one of our team. It starts with a conversation about the wedding and your wardrobe, then the 21 measurements, then cloth and details: colour, lapel, buttons, lining, and whether you want a vest or a tuxedo finish. What to expect at your custom suit appointment covers the session in detail.

You can place the order in the room or confirm it afterwards. The sooner it is confirmed, the sooner production starts.

Production

Five to six weeks. Nothing is waiting for you here, which is exactly why the appointment date carries the whole timeline. How long a custom suit takes breaks the production window down further.

Delivery and the try-on

When the suit arrives, put it on with the shirt and shoes you plan to wear, and move around in it. Sit, raise your arms, walk. Built from 21 measurements, it is usually right. Sometimes a sleeve or a hem wants a small change.

Adjustments

If anything needs adjusting when your suit arrives, we cover the cost and have it handled by a tailor near you. It takes one to two weeks, and it has to be raised within 30 days of delivery. Your measurements are updated on file afterwards. What custom suit alterations include explains what is normal.

Try it on again closer to the day

When the suit arrives, try it on with the shirt and shoes you will wear, and try it again a few weeks out in case your weight has moved. That is what the four months are really for: room to put things right without anyone feeling rushed.

Groomsmen and the Wedding Party

If the groomsmen are ordering, aim for about five months out. If you are already inside that, you are not too late: we can still look after you, and a rush is available if it comes to that. A group of four to six needs ten to twelve weeks at a minimum just to get everyone through their appointments, and more if anyone travels or is hard to pin down. Some will book the first day. Some will need three reminders.

The order that works:

1. The groom's appointment comes first. The cloth and colour chosen there become the foundation for the party. 2. Each groomsman books his own appointment at whichever studio suits him, or the party can come in together, allowing about twenty minutes of measuring each. If the group is coming at once, the groom, and the bride if she wants to be there, should arrive first and settle the cloth, so the choice is not made by six to ten opinions at once. The fabric is already decided, so his appointment is about his measurements and the small details. 3. A groomsman who lives too far to come in measures remotely with a guided form and two photos, and we confirm his numbers with him before anything is cut. 4. The last groomsman should be booked by the four-month mark where possible, the same as the groom.

Book the group before the rest of the wedding details are locked in. This is the piece wedding parties most often wish they had handled earlier. Fathers of the groom and bride are on the same clock, and what the fathers should wear covers their side. Rush Orders

Anything under eight weeks puts pressure on every step. Under six weeks is a rush.

A rush can often be done, and you still get the full choice of cloth. What a rush costs you is a rush charge, 7.5% or 15% depending on how tight the date is, and the slack that makes the process calm. If an alteration or a remake is needed there is little room for it, so the suit has to be right the first time. We do not take an order inside four weeks of the date you need it, and in our busy season, February through August, that line is firm. If that is where you are, call us and we will tell you honestly whether it can work.

What If You Are Already Late

Here is how I would read your situation, counted from today.

Three to four months out: you are fine. Book this week and follow the table above.

Two to three months out: it works, with less slack. Get the appointment in now, confirm the order the same day, and get the suit into production.

Six to eight weeks out: tight. It is possible if the appointment happens right away and you go in knowing the timeline leaves no slack.

Under six weeks: a rush. Call before you book so we can check your date first.

The appointment is complimentary either way. Booking it early costs nothing and removes every timing worry. If you are also weighing up renting, wedding suit rental vs custom compares the two honestly, timing included. Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I order a made-to-measure wedding suit?

Around four months before the wedding is the calmest runway, and it is not a deadline. Production is five to six weeks, a date two or three months out still works, and we rush when a date is close.

How far in advance should the groom get his suit?

Book the appointment around four months out so the finished suit arrives roughly two months before the wedding. That leaves time for any adjustment before the day.

How long does it take to get suits for a wedding?

For one made-to-measure suit, plan on about four months from booking the appointment to wearing it comfortably. For a full wedding party, aim for about five months, not because the suits take longer, but because co-ordinating four to six men takes ten to twelve weeks on its own. Later than that is not a lost cause: a rush is available, it simply costs a rush charge and some calm.

How far in advance should groomsmen get their suits?

Start about five months before the wedding and have every groomsman booked by the four-month mark. The groom's appointment goes first so the cloth and colour are set before the others come in.

When should I book a tailored or bespoke wedding suit?

For made-to-measure, which is what we make, about four months ahead. True bespoke is a different process: a pattern drafted from scratch by hand and several fittings in a test garment in inexpensive cloth before the real suit is cut. It usually needs considerably longer than four months.

How long does a suit fitting take for a wedding?

The appointment at our studio runs 45 to 90 minutes. Most of that is the conversation and choosing cloth. The 21 measurements take only a few minutes.

How far in advance should I get a tux for my wedding?

The same as a suit. A tuxedo cut is an option on any of our fabrics for $75, and production is the same five to six weeks, so book about four months out. If you are still deciding, suit or tux for a wedding helps.

Can a custom wedding suit be made in a month?

Rarely, and not comfortably. Production alone is five to six weeks. Inside six weeks it is a rush order: the full choice of cloth still stands, but there is a rush charge of 7.5% or 15% and no slack if anything needs adjusting. We do not take orders inside four weeks of the date. Call us and we will tell you honestly whether your date can work.

How long should a wedding suit jacket and trousers be?

The jacket should cover your seat and the hem should land around the knuckles of your hand with your arms relaxed. The sleeve shows a little shirt cuff. Trousers have a plain hem that just touches the shoe. Suit sleeve length and the trouser fit guide go into detail.
