How Long Should Your Suit Sleeves Be?

A man in a windowpane suit
The short version

A suit sleeve should end at the base of your wrist bone, letting about half an inch of shirt cuff show. Too long and it swallows your hands, too short and it looks like you have outgrown the jacket. It is one of the easiest fit details to correct.

Sleeve length is one of the smallest suit details and one of the most telling. Get it right and the jacket looks sharp and finished. Get it wrong and even a good suit looks off. Here is exactly where your sleeves should end.

Where the Sleeve Should End

A jacket sleeve should end at the base of your wrist bone, where your hand meets your arm. That length lets the jacket frame your hands rather than cover them. It is the reference point every other sleeve rule builds from, and it is set precisely when a suit is built to your measurements.

Show a Little Cuff

With the jacket sleeve at the wrist bone, about half an inch of shirt cuff should show beyond it. That sliver of shirt is a deliberate part of a finished look, and it depends on both the jacket and the shirt sleeve fitting correctly. Too much cuff looks sloppy, none at all looks like the jacket is too long.

Trouser and sleeve proportions

An Easy Fix

Sleeve length is one of the simpler alterations, so no one needs to live with sleeves that swallow their hands. On a made-to-measure suit it is set correctly from the start, and on any jacket a good tailor can adjust it. It is a small change that makes a suit look noticeably sharper.
