Wedding Suit Rental vs Custom: Should You Rent or Buy?

A rented wedding suit costs less on the day, but it is sized mostly off your chest measurement and goes back the morning after. A made-to-measure suit starts at $899, is built from 21 measurements, and is yours to wear again, so it costs less per wear once you wear it a few more times. Rent only if you will genuinely never wear a suit again or your date is too close for a custom order.
If you will wear a suit again after the wedding, even a handful of times, buy one made to your measurements. If you genuinely never will, renting does the job.
Renting costs less on the day. Owning costs less by about the third time you wear it. The rest of this page is the detail behind that, so you can decide on what actually applies to you.

Cost Over Time
This is the part most comparisons skip.
A rental at $300 is $300 every time. Rent for your wedding, then for a friend's wedding, then for a work gala, and you have spent about $900 on three garments you do not own, none of which were made to make you look good.
A made-to-measure suit starts at $899 in a wool blend, $1,299 in Super 120s wool, and $1,699 in Super 150s. A custom fit package, one suit and one dress shirt, starts at $1,098. Shirts start at $199.
Now spread it out. A $1,098 package worn to the wedding and to 30 events over the next five years costs about $35 per wear. A $300 rental worn once costs $300 per wear.
So the question is not which option costs less upfront. It is what you own at the end and what it cost each time you put it on. If you have a job, a friend group that is still getting married, or a calendar with any formal events in it, the custom suit wins by about the third wear. Is a custom suit worth it runs the same math beyond weddings, and how much to spend on your first suit helps you pick a cloth.
Payment plans are available, bi-weekly or monthly, if spreading the cost helps.

*A note on the cloth: the fabrics and linings in these photographs are examples, not a fixed menu. Every lining is chosen for the man it is made for, so yours will be its own. Our books also change as mills come and go, and they change without notice. If a cloth you have chosen is unavailable when your order is placed, we replace it with one of the same quality or better, as close to the colour as we can get, and we tell you before anything is cut.*
Fit on a Twelve-Hour Day
A wedding day is long. You are in the suit for eight to twelve hours. You are photographed hundreds of times, hugged, pulled onto a dance floor, and sat at a head table under every kind of light.
A rental is sized mostly off one number, your chest. The waist is taken in, the trousers are hemmed, and the rest is close enough. Close enough shows up in photos as a jacket that is long in the body, sleeves that swallow the shirt cuff, or shoulders that sit wider than yours.
A made-to-measure suit is built from 21 measurements taken separately: shoulders, chest, and waist as their own numbers, and trousers cut for your legs. The jacket sits on your shoulders and the sleeve shows a little cuff. That difference is what you see when you look back at the photos in twenty years. Common suit fit mistakes shows what to look for either way.

What You Keep
With a rental, you keep the photos.
With a custom suit, you keep the suit. A navy, charcoal, or mid-grey wedding suit goes straight into your working wardrobe. Swap the tie, change the pocket square, and it is a suit for interviews, client meetings, funerals, and every wedding you are a guest at after yours.
You also keep your measurements. They stay on file, so a second suit does not need a full appointment again. A re-order takes about 20 minutes in person or by phone, and production is the same five to six weeks.
Timeline: Rental Is Faster
This is the one place rental clearly wins. A rental can be sorted in days or a few weeks.
A made-to-measure suit is built from scratch, so it needs planning. Book your appointment around four months before the wedding for the calmest run, and sooner still works, we rush when a date is close. Production is five to six weeks, and the rest of the time covers delivery and any adjustment. When to order a custom wedding suit has the month-by-month table.
If your date is closer than that, ask before you book. Inside six weeks it becomes a rush, and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done.
When Rental Genuinely Makes Sense
There are real cases where renting is the practical answer.
A groomsman who does not wear suits for work, will not wear one after the wedding, and is standing up as a favour to the groom may not need to own one.
A date inside four weeks, which we cannot take on, leaves no time for a garment built from scratch.
A beach ceremony where the dress code is a linen shirt and trousers is not a suit question at all.
Those are the exceptions. For a groom marrying somewhere that calls for a suit, and who has any use for one afterwards, owning it is the better spend over any reasonable stretch of time. If you are still deciding what that suit should be, how to choose a wedding suit and wedding suit colours are the next reads.

The Wedding Party Math
Across a party, the numbers scale.
Five groomsmen renting at $300 each is $1,500 for one day, five garments that fit approximately, and nothing kept.
Five made-to-measure suits at $899 each is $4,495 for five garments each man owns and can wear again. If each man wears his five more times in the two years after the wedding, that is about $150 per wear, and falling.
Custom takes more planning. The groom's appointment sets the cloth and colour, then each groomsman books his own appointment at our studio, or measures remotely with a guided form and two photos if he lives further away. Start about five months out where you can, and if you are already inside that, we can still look after you. Groomsmen suits in the Fraser Valley covers how the coordination works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to rent or buy a wedding suit?
Buy if you will wear a suit again, even a few times. A made-to-measure suit from $899 costs less per wear than a $300 rental by the third outing, and it fits you. Rent only if you will genuinely never wear a suit again or the date is too close for a custom order.
How much does it cost to rent a suit for a wedding?
Suit rentals typically run $150 to $400, depending on the style and whether shirt, tie, and shoes are included. You pay that every time you rent.
How much is a wedding suit for the groom?
Our made-to-measure suits start at $899 in a wool blend, $1,299 in Super 120s wool, and $1,699 in Super 150s. Dress shirts start at $199, and a custom fit package of one suit and one shirt starts at $1,098. Price Your Outfit gives you a number in about ten seconds.
Do made-to-measure suits take longer to arrive than rentals?
Yes. A rental can be sorted in days or weeks. A made-to-measure suit takes five to six weeks to produce, and we recommend booking about four months before the wedding so there is time for delivery and any adjustment, without anyone watching a calendar.
Can the groom buy custom and the groomsmen rent?
You can, but the cloth will not match. A rental comes in whatever the rental rack has, so the groomsmen's suits will differ in shade and texture from the groom's. We do not rent, so if the party is meant to look coordinated, have everyone made in the same cloth, or put the groomsmen in a complementary colour. Do not try to match a rental to a made suit, it ends up clashing.
How do I get reliable sizing for a whole wedding party?
Each man needs his own measurements, not a chest size. With us, every groomsman gets 21 measurements at the studio closest to him, or measures remotely with a guided form and two photos, and we confirm his numbers with him before anything is cut.
Can I wear my wedding suit again?
Yes, and that is the main reason to own it. A navy, charcoal, or mid-grey wedding suit wears to work, interviews, and every wedding after yours. Change the tie and pocket square and it reads as a different outfit.
Reserve Your Appointment
The appointment is complimentary, at our studio with our Owner and Founder, Derek Burbidge, or online if you are not nearby. We will talk through the wedding, what you will wear the suit to afterwards, and what fits your budget.
Your wedding photos are forever. Do not leave the suit to a last-minute rental. Book a complimentary consultation and we will get it right, for you and the whole party. Four months out is ideal, sooner still works. Let's talk.
