Custom Suit Alterations: What's Included and What Costs Extra

Made-to-measure fit calibration and later alterations are not the same thing. Here's the difference, and what tends to fall on each side of it.
A made-to-measure suit is built from your own measurements, so most men need little or nothing adjusted at the first fitting. That first fitting, and any small calibration it turns up, is part of the process you already paid for. What comes later, after the suit has been worn, your body has changed, or you want something added that wasn't in the original order, is a separate cost. The two get confused constantly, so here is where the line actually sits.
What's Part of the Original Fit
The first fitting exists specifically to catch anything the measurements alone did not fully capture, a sleeve a touch long, a trouser break that needs adjusting. That calibration is built into the process. It is not billed as an alteration because it is the process finishing its job, not a change happening after the fact.
What Counts as an Alteration You'll Be Billed For
Anything requested after the suit has already been finished and delivered is a separate service. That includes drastic weight or body changes since the order, a design element added after the fact that wasn't part of the original build such as changing the length of the jacket if it is not within our standard guidelines in our remakes and alteration policy. Common fit problems that show up well after a suit has been worn for a while usually fall in this category rather than the original fitting.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems
Knowing which side of that line a request falls on before you reserve a fitting saves a conversation nobody enjoys having after the fact. Ask at the time you book: is this a calibration of the original order, or a change to something already finished? The answer determines whether it's covered or billed, and asking upfront is simpler than assuming either way. It also explains why made-to-measure suits generally need less alteration over their life than an off-the-rack suit does. The starting point was already built around you, so there is simply less to correct later.
FAQ
Are alterations included in the price of a made-to-measure suit?
The fit calibration done at your first fitting, catching anything the initial measurements didn't fully capture, is part of the process. Changes requested after the suit is finished, from a body change or an added feature, are billed separately.
How much do suit alterations usually cost?
It depends entirely on what's being changed. A small adjustment costs far less than something structural like reworking a shoulder. Ask for a specific number at your fitting before anything is done, rather than assuming a flat rate.
Do made-to-measure suits need fewer alterations than off-the-rack ones?
Yes. Because the pattern starts from your own measurements rather than a standard size, most men need little to nothing adjusted at the first fitting, which is a different starting point than an off-the-rack suit altered after the fact.
