What to Wear to a Funeral: A Men's Guide

A quiet, practical guide to funeral attire for men. What colours work, what to leave at home, and how to dress respectfully with what's already in your closet.
You do not need a black suit to dress correctly for a funeral. A dark, solid suit in navy or charcoal does the job just as well, and it is the suit most men already own. The goal is not to look formal for its own sake. It is to dress in a way that does not draw attention, so the day stays about the person being remembered.
If the family has asked for something specific, a celebration of life instead of a traditional service, or a particular colour, follow that request over anything in this guide. If there are no specific instructions, here is what works.
The Suit and Colour
Navy, charcoal, or black are all correct. Solid or a very quiet, barely visible texture is safer than anything with a pattern you can see from a few feet away. If your only suit has a windowpane check or a chalk stripe, it is still better than showing up underdressed, but a plain option is the better choice if you have one.

Shirt, Tie, and What to Leave Off
A white or pale blue dress shirt is correct under any of the suit colours above. Keep the tie plain and dark, navy, charcoal, or burgundy in a solid or a very fine texture. Skip anything bright, novelty, or with a loud pattern. Skip the pocket square, or use a plain white one folded flat rather than puffed. This is one of the few days where the goal is genuinely to disappear into the room, not to be noticed.
Black shoes are the safer default. Brown works with navy or charcoal if that is what you own, so long as it is a dark, clean, unscuffed pair.
What If You Don't Own a Dark Suit?
If what you own skews light grey or tan, a dark tie and a subdued shirt bring it down considerably, and that is an acceptable substitute on short notice. For the next occasion, a navy or charcoal suit is also the first piece most men are told to build toward when starting a wardrobe from nothing, precisely because it covers this kind of day along with nearly everything else formal.
FAQ
Can you wear a black suit to a funeral?
Yes. Black is the traditional choice and always correct. Navy and charcoal are equally acceptable in most settings today and are more likely to already be in your closet.
Is it disrespectful to wear navy or charcoal instead of black?
No. Navy and charcoal read as formally as black in a modern service and are the standard recommendation unless the family has specifically requested black, or the service follows a tradition where black is expected.
Do you need a black tie for a funeral?
A dark, subdued tie is enough. "Black tie" as a dress code refers to a tuxedo for formal evening events, not literally a black necktie, so do not read that phrase as an instruction here. Any plain, dark tie in navy, charcoal, or burgundy works.
