Vest/Waistcoat Rules

Vest rules, waistcoat rules, how to wear a vest, how to wear a three piece suit, three piece suit
A three piece suit is always associated with being really well dressed and classy. However, many people make mistakes with their waistcoats (also known as vests which refers to a more casual look) that can ruin the whole look.

1.) - Fit

Wrong

Right
A waistcoat is going to fit tighter than your suit jacket but the fit we are talking mainly about here is in relation to the length. You shouldn't be able to see white in the dress shirt and it should completely cover your belt line.

2.) - Redundancy

Right
Even the "experts" get this common rule wrong. The waistcoat tucks the tie in nicely where you don't need a tie bar to hold it in place but many people still do. It's redundant and unnecessary. We suggest losing the tie bar and replacing it with another accessory instead like a lapel pin or some wrist jewelry.

3.) - The Belt

Right
Like we said above the belt should be hidden with the proper fitting waistcoat so to have one worn with your pants just adds extra bulk. With properly tailored pants you shouldn't need a belt at all, so it will be easy to follow this rule.

4.) - Breasted

A single breasted jacket goes with a single breasted or a double breasted waistcoat.
A double breasted jacket only goes with a single breasted waistcoat.

5.) - Bottom Button

Like the suit jacket the waistcoat's bottom button should be left undone. There are many reasons out there as to how this started and a few even on why it's done. The main reason is because it allows for more mobility when sitting down as the waistcoat is able to slide a little easier.

At the end of the day I hate the word "rule", but my goal is to see our followers and clients dress their best. If you can adhere to the above mentioned "rules" you will see your style game start to elevate as others take notice.
