Why Muscular Men Can’t Find Suits That Fit (And What Actually Works)

Muscular men struggle to find suits that fit because off-the-rack suits are engineered for average body proportions. A man with a large chest, broad shoulders, and a trim waist will always find that suits built for his chest size have far too much room through the waist, while suits sized for his waist pull across the chest and shoulders. The only reliable solution is made-to-measure, a suit cut to your actual measurements rather than a standard size.

A bodybuilder in a deep blue custom suit that fits his frame. He is holding a bar with weights on it over a bench press.

This is one of the most common situations I see at Cardero. A physically fit man comes in frustrated, convinced the problem is with him. It’s not. The problem is structural, and it’s baked into how off-the-rack suits are made.

Why do suits never fit muscular or athletic builds?

Off-the-rack suits are built around statistical averages. A size 44R assumes a specific ratio between your chest, shoulders, waist, and sleeve length, a ratio that reflects the average proportions for a man with a 44-inch chest, which typically includes a certain amount of midsection circumference. A man who trains regularly and carries that chest with a noticeably smaller waist falls outside that ratio entirely.

Size up to fit the chest and the waist has inches of excess fabric. Size down to fit the waist and the suit pulls across the back and shoulders the moment you reach for anything.

This isn’t a fit problem you can solve with alterations. Shoulders and chest structure can’t be remade. You can take in a waist, but when the shoulder seam is in the wrong place because you bought the wrong size to accommodate your chest, no tailor can fix that without rebuilding the jacket.

What does made-to-measure do differently for athletic builds?

Made-to-measure starts with your measurements, not a standard size. At Cardero, we take 21 measurements: chest, shoulders, waist, seat, sleeve pitch, posture, and more. The pattern is adjusted to your proportions before a single piece of fabric is cut. Your chest measurement determines the chest panel. Your waist measurement determines the waist suppression. They’re not compromised against each other.

The result is a jacket that sits cleanly across the shoulders, lies flat across the chest, and tapers through the waist to show the shape of your body rather than hide it in excess fabric. For athletic builds, this difference is often dramatic.

Do I need to order a different style for a muscular build?

Not necessarily. Your build determines some practical choices, a slightly higher armhole often works better for men who train, because it allows more freedom of movement through the shoulder and upper back. We’ll work through these details in the consultation based on your specific proportions.

Where can athletic or muscular men get properly fitted suits in BC?

Cardero Clothing has served men with athletic and muscular builds across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland since 2015. Our studios are in Langley, Abbotsford, and Coquitlam. The first appointment is free. We’ve seen this situation many times and know how to build a suit that actually fits.

How much does a custom suit for a muscular build cost?

The same as any Cardero suit, starting at $899 for a wool blend. Most of our bodybuilders clients opt for the $1,049 wool blend fabrics since it has 3% lycra in it which allows for a bit of stretch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t muscular men find suits that fit?
Off-the-rack suits are built for average proportions. Men with a large chest and trim waist fall outside the ratios those suits are designed around, making it nearly impossible to get a clean fit without made-to-measure construction.

Can a tailor fix an off-the-rack suit for a muscular build?
A tailor can improve many things, but structural issues, shoulder seam placement, chest canvas, sleeve pitch, cannot be corrected on an off-the-rack jacket. Made-to-measure builds these proportions correctly from the start.

Do custom suits cost more for athletic or large builds?
If any measurement goes over 50", yes but, it is not a substantial amount and will only be charged at cost with no margins to be fair to the client.
